DAAD Alumni serving as peace advocates in the African Community

DAAD Alumni Events are bi- or multi-lateral events that bring together various alumni groups as well as scientific, political, social, cultural, and economic institutions for the purpose of topical or scientific exchange and networking. These events also foster collaboration and relationships between the alumni with Germany and support the exchange of experiences between alumni and prospective students as well as future scholarship holders. The DAAD is also particularly interested in supporting events that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Development can only happen in a peaceful environment. Management and resolution of conflicts are key condiments for peace in our homes, communities and workplaces. This Alumni event brought together 25 DAAD Alumni from different parts of West Africa to receive a 3-day training on topics related to peace and conflict management under the sponsorship of DAAD. Participants learnt the art and science of mediation, causes, types and effects of conflicts and their management strategies. The second phase of the program took the participants to visit Danfa Traditional Council, Adentan Municipal Assembly and Adenta Divisional Police Headquarters to receive first-hand information on how conflicts are managed by traditional and government authorities. Facilitators for the program were drawn from the Ghana Police service, Ghana Bar Association and National Peace Council who were all experts in peace keeping and conflict management. Participants were tasked to practice what they had learnt in their respective environments.

It’s indeed an unforgettable experience for me as a first-timer participant of the DAAD workshop series. Kudos to the planning team Dr Ben & Amanda, and everyone behind the scene. It was such a brilliant event planning. Special thanks to our facilitators.
